Pulsed Eddy Current

Pulsed Eddy Current (P.E.C.) applies low frequency (pulsed) magnetic field, resulting in eddy currents generating in the material. By measuring the response and duration of the eddy currents, a calculation gives the average thickness of the material within the enclosed magnetic field (footprint). The diameter of the footprint various based on material and insulation thickness as well as the footprint of the probe (which varies with PEC systems and applicatins).

The most common application for P.E.C. is corrosion under insulation on tanks, spheres and piping systems. Accuracies are highly dependent on the training and experience of the operator.
